Freel founded Swell in 1989 after meeting drummer Sean Kirkpatrick in the San Francisco
In April 1990, they published their self-titled first album on their own pSychosPecificMusic label, and that August, they opened for Mazzy Star at San Francisco’s I-Beam.
Over the following two decades, they would produce over a dozen albums and compilations, including…Well? (1991), Too Many Days Without Thinking (1997), and For All the Beautiful People (2001). (1998). Freel wrote the majority of 2001’s Everybody Wants to Know on his own, and by 2009’s Be My Weapon.
Greasy, his most recent album, was released in 2014.
He was 56 years old.
